What is eMusic?

eMusic is music in digital format that you can either stream or download and store on a computer, laptop, tablet, smart phone or other device to listen to at your convenience.

Freegal provides free access to around 7 million songs from a variety of music labels. It offers a choice of thousands of artists and includes many different music genres.

To help out during this time of pandemic, you can now stream music and music videos 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You also get 5 free downloads per week, with songs counted as 1 download and videos counted as 2 downloads each.

To listen to Freegal music:

  1. Visit Freegal and enter your full library card number (A20003xxxxxxxxxB) and date of birth password in eight numbers (ddmmyyyy)
  2. Downloads are all in the MP3 format with no digital rights management (DRM) issues, and will work with any MP3 player, including iPods, and can be loaded into iTunes. They will work on both PCs and Macs. Freegal mobile apps are available for downloading onto patron's devices from both mainstream app stores.
  3. Freegal allows easy search and browse access
  4. Every song has a sample clip you can listen to before you download.

Freegal advises that you should back up any songs you download as they are unable to restore lost or damaged downloads.

Freegal does not require any software to be downloaded, and the songs you download are yours to keep.

The site has a counter in the top right hand corner of the screen which will keep a count of your weekly downloads. The counter is reset each Monday to allow you to start downloading again. You can also create a wish list of songs for future downloading.

The Library of Congress National Jukebox includes historical sound recordings from the archives of the Library of Congress Packard Campus for Audio Visual Conservation. Requires a web browser with Javascript enabled and Adobe Flash Player 10+.
