About the gallery

Counihan gallery logoThe Counihan Gallery In Brunswick is the Merri-bek Council art gallery open to the public.

The gallery has a focus on presenting contemporary art exhibitions.

The gallery aims to promote and inspire innovation and diversity in the visual arts through its annual program of exhibitions. It also endeavours to encourage discussion and debate about new ideas and issues in contemporary art and culture through the public program of floor talks, forums and workshops.

The gallery opened in 1999 and is named in honour of the Australian artist and activist Noel Counihan.

The Counihan Gallery acknowledges the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people as the Traditional Custodians of the lands and waterways in the area now known as Merri-bek. We pay respect to their Elders past, present, and emerging, as well as to all First Nations communities who significantly contribute to the life of the area.
