Waste reporting

Council collects garbage, recycling and food and garden organics from residential and commercial properties across Merri-bek.

This information is provided to give residents a greater understanding of the amount of waste generated and collected by Council over a 12 month period.

Annual tonnages for 2019-20

Garbage: 29,456 tonnes

Recycling: 15,784 tonnes

Food and Garden Organics: 11,928 tonnes

Food and Garden Organics processing:
In-Vessel Composting Facility at Bulla, managed by Veolia

The above facilities do not stock pile any of the materials received from Council.

Diversion of waste from landfill 

Through the collection and processing of recyclables and organics, Council diverted 48% of all waste collected via the kerbside service from landfill in 2019-20.
