Vacancies also exist for suitably qualified people who live in Merri-bek or who are in close proximity to Merri-bek Municipal boundaries, and would like to work in their own home as a Family Day Care Educator.

About Merri-bek Family Day Care

Moreland Family Day Care is an approved child care service provided in the home of a registered Family Day Care Educator.

Moreland Family Day Care Educators are qualified early childhood education and care professionals. They are supported by Council’s Coordination Unit who are responsible for approving, supporting, training and advising educators.

Family Day Care offers professional education and care for children from birth to 12 years of age.

The service provides flexible hours and small groups with planned programs focused on helping children develop a sense of confidence, connecting children with their community, developing social skills, and promoting happy and healthy children.

Hours of operation

Educators provide flexible hours, including weekend, before and after school, school holiday and evening care.

The Coordination Unit is available Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5pm.

 

Cost of Family Day Care

Moreland Family Day Care sets its hourly rates and fees annually. Rates compare favourably with other child care services.

Families may be eligible for Federal Government child care subsidies.

Enrolling a child in Family Day Care

Family Day Care is part of the Merri-bek Child Care Central Registration Service

To register for Family Day Care in Merri-bek, you need to register through the Child Care Central Registration Service.

Visit child care centres for information on the application process and requirements. 

 

Family Day Care Educators

Educators are independent contractors registered with Council to provide care and education for children in a safe and stimulating home environment.

Educators receive support from our Family Day Care Coordination Unit in the form of:

  • regular home visits
  • professional training calendar to update health, safety and child development knowledge
  • playgroups conducted by the Coordination Unit, and
  • support group with other educators.

People wishing to become a Family Day Care Educator with Merri-bek Family Day Care require:

  • Certificate III in Children's Services (minimum qualification)
  • a police check and Working with Children Check for all adults 18 years and over and living in the home
  • a safe home environment
  • public liability insurance
  • an assessment of childcare skills, and
  • current first aid training including CPR, Asthma Management and Anaphylaxis Awareness.

Meet Lesley

Lesley has been a Family Day Educator at Merri-bek for over 36 years and loves making a positive impact on young children's lives.

Supported by Council, Hilary provides flexible hours of care from her home for small groups of children aged from birth to 12 years, ideal for families working shift work or requiring weekend and overnight care.

Quality standards and regulation

Qualified Council staff administer the service in accordance with Commonwealth Government funding guidelines and the Education and Care Services National Law and Regulations.

In April 2014, Merri-bek Family Day Care was assessed against the National Quality Standard and achieved the highest possible rating of Exceeding National Quality Standard.
