Local actions to prevent family violence
The Moreland Gender Equality Commitment (PDF 701Kb) provides the framework for local actions by Council and community partners to:
- promote gender equality
- prevent and respond to family violence in Merri-bek
The Gender Equality Commitment is guided by a number of policies at national, state and municipal level, including:
- National Plan to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children 2010‑20
- Free From Violence - Victoria’s strategy to prevent family violence and all forms of violence against women (PDF 4.82 MB)
- Ending Family Violence: Victoria’s Plan for Change
- Safe and Strong, A Victorian Gender Equality Strategy
- Moreland Human Rights Policy 2016-26
From March 2021 the Victorian Gender Equality legislation will also guide Council actions.
The Commitment is supported by an Action Plan 2019-2021. The first Progress Report September 2020 (PDF 667Kb) provides an overview of projects currently underway or recently implemented for the seven Gender Equality Commitments:
- Equal visibility, self representation and leadership opportunities
- Accessible and safe public spaces, including for sports and recreation
- Equal pay for equal work
- Safe and affordable housing
- Access to formal and community education
- Empowering everyone to support the Gender Equality Commitment
- Accountability
