Project update
Construction works are now complete. Thank you for your patience during construction.
Project background
Council carried out improvements to the Holmes-Nicholson-Merri-bek Shopping Strip, as part of Council’s Shopping Strip Renewal Program.
The aim was to revitalise the area and improve the pedestrian amenity, walkability and presentation of the shopping strip.
Key improvements include:
- Footpath upgrade including paving, and kerb and channel
- Landscaping, including new street trees
- Upgrade of street furniture
- Additional bike hoops
The construction phase commenced in May 2018 and concluded in October 2018. The works were undertaken in stages, to minimise the disruption to the busy intersection.

Major stages of the project
Consultation - Complete
A survey was undertaken in November 2016 to seek community feedback on the streetscape improvement.
A report and a one-page summary outlining community feedback from this survey is now available.

Design - Complete
Feedback received has informed the development of the Final Concept Design Plan (PDF 4Mb) which has sought to address various issues including safety, amenity, and presentation of the streetscape.
Council officers held an Information Session to discuss the community's comments and feedback on the Draft Concept Design, at the Holmes-Nicholson-Merri-bek Shopping Strip on 21 March 2017.
Construction
Stage 1 commenced on 30 April and completed in October 2018.
During construction, access was maintained to all stores in the shopping centre.

- Stage A, north-west area of intersection: May – June 2018
- Stage B, north-east area of intersection: June – July 2018
- Stage C, south of intersection: July – September 2018
- Asphalt resheeting of road pavement: October – November 2018
