Herbert Street Reserve, Pascoe Vale - Living stream project

Project overview

This project aimed to re-establish a “living stream” in the former creek line of Moonee Ponds Creek.

Stormwater from an existing Council drain that runs through the Herbert Street Reserve is now treated and flows from small rainfall events used to re-establish a “living stream.”

Water from heavy rainfall events will continue to bypass the reserve in the existing drainage.

The project provides numerous benefits including improving the local habitat and biodiversity, reducing pollution going into Moonee Ponds Creek, and improving the attractiveness and passive recreation use of the reserve.

Project budget and timelines

• Budget: $200,000
• Design: Completed in 2016
• Construction: Completed in the first half of 2017

Major stages of the project

This project is now complete.

The proposal, as pictured below, is to re-establish a “living stream” in the former creek line of Moonee Ponds Creek. The low flow stormwater from the existing Council drain that runs through the Herbert Street Reserve will be cleaned and used to re-establish a “living stream”.

Water from heavy rainfall events will continue to bypass the reserve in the existing drainage to avoid flooding. 

This Project has been assisted by the Victorian Government through Melbourne Water Corporation as part of the Living Rivers Stormwater Program.
