Merri and Edgars Creek, Coburg North - Wetlands development

Project overview

Council, in conjunction with Melbourne Water, constructed a wetland at the confluence of the Merri and Edgars Creek, east of Golf Road in Coburg North.

The Merri and Edgars Creek Wetland Concept Plan was developed with the assistance of consultants and a Project Working Group, which includes a range of Council departments, state government departments and local community groups.

The wetlands location was endorsed by Council following public consultation as part of the Edgars Creek Conservation and Development plan in 2013. Aspects of the project, such as planting, were delivered with the assistance of local community groups.

The wetland aims to:

• provide a unique area for plants and animals, some which are rare and locally threatened
• treat and improve stormwater before it enters the Merri Creek, and
• provide a new natural open space area for passive recreation.

Major stages of the project

The construction and planting phases for the wetland began on 15 December 2015. This involved excavating and shaping the wetland, realigning and connecting stormwater as well as planting and landscaping works.

Works were completed in June 2016.
