Special Council Meeting in relation to a recent Waste Services review (media statement)

At its meeting held on 10 July 2019, Council considered a report in relation to a recent Waste Services review.

The review identifies that Council’s in-house service costs approximately $1.15 million more and receives 30% more complaints than the equivalent service operating under a contracted service, south of Bell Street. After two years of working with existing staff and the Australian Services Union to improve the quality and efficiency of the service to the north of Merri-bek, the gap in service remains.

Council remains committed to ensuring ratepayers receive best value services and will now proceed with testing the market, to evaluate all options for consideration, with a decision to be made later this year.

Council has committed to again provide support to existing waste services staff and work with the Australian Services Union to prepare and respond to the tendering process, so that they are able to compete for the continued provision of an in-house service.
