A space for dogs to run free (Media release)

There’s a new hang out for dogs in Brunswick following the opening of Merri-bek’s first enclosed dog park at Gilpin Park.

The new space has a 1.5 metre-high secure fence, native trees, a gravel running track and a special time-out area for elderly or timid dogs. There are also dog drinking dishes fitted to drinking taps throughout the area, and park benches so owners can get to know their neighbours while the dogs play.

Moreland City Councillor Helen Davidson officially opened the new park last week and said the new park was designed to provide dogs with physical exercise and mental stimulation, help prevent behavioural problems, and also allow dog owners to learn to control their dog in a confined area.

“As a dog lover myself and owner of a lively German Shepherd, I can appreciate just how valuable this dog park will be for dog owners to come and give their pets the opportunity to run free and meet up with other dogs,” said Cr Davidson.

“In an enclosed area, commands can be taught off-leash without the worry of the dog running out of sight or worse, onto the roadway.”

Since the successful creation the enclosed dog park in Gilpin Park, Council is now progressing with a second dog park, at Richards Reserve in Coburg, which is due to open before the end of 2018.

“It’s important that Merri-bek’s dogs are healthy, active and happy and have opportunities to socialise and train, so they behave appropriately and don’t cause a nuisance to people or other pets in our community,” concluded Cr Davidson.
