Council is commited to gender equality (Media release)

Moreland City Council is introducing a new Gender Equality Commitment and invites the community to have their say.

Moreland City Council Mayor, Cr Natalie Abboud, said the Gender Equality Commitment asks that we all work consciously towards creating a future where all gender identities can flourish in Merri-bek.

"Informed by our Gender Equality Committee and the community, the Merri-bek Gender Equality Commitment provides a framework to ensure Council's actions and services are inclusive, culturally safe and respectful for all gender and cultural identities," Cr Abboud said.

Stephanie Kabanyana Kanyandekwe, a community member on the Gender Equality Committee, said the Gender Equality Commitment was a reflection of all the community consultations across this year.

"We started this journey back in December 2017 with a community Gender Equality Forum where activity-based feedback was sought," Ms Kanyandekwe said.

"Every month we've met to design a flexible, living document that ensures Merri-bek City Council promotes, progresses and models gender equality."
