Council helps students prepare for VCE (Media release)
Yas Karacan is studying Speech Pathology at Latrobe University but he still remembers the stress he faced during his VCE. “It was a very stressful time because there is a lot of pressure on you to get good results,” he said.
Yas was able to get some extra help from Oxygen Merri-bek Youth Services. He participated in some VCE master classes provided by Oxygen, which is run by the Merri-bek City Council.
The classes were first established to help young people in the community with their VCE English exams.
This year they have been expanded and classes are running from early July until early October.
“These master classes have been a great help to our young people and we have now broadened the subjects to include biology, chemistry, further maths and maths methods,” said Merri-bek City Council Mayor Cr John Kavanagh.
“The classes are free and are run by qualified VCE teachers,” he said.
They are designed to help students better prepare for VCE exams by increasing their knowledge and confidence in a relaxed environment.
They worked well for Yas who is now not only a University student but a tutor at Oxygen Youth Space.
“The master classes allowed me to become exam ready. So in the last few months before my final exams I wasn’t that stressed,” Yas said.
