Merri-bek summer about to shine (Media release)

With summer just around the corner Merri-bekers are beginning to head to their local pool to stay active, cool and happy.

Open all year round, the outdoor pool at Brunswick Baths is already bustling with swimmers this month ahead of the summer opening dates for Merri-bek’s seasonal outdoor pools.

This year, Pascoe Vale Outdoor Pool has opened its doors extra early – from Sunday 12 November.

This is to make sure facilities are available to the community, with the Oak Park Aquatic Centre undergoing an extensive $27.3m upgrade.

Three completely new heated pools, as well as water-play equipment, a new sports pavilion and water slides are coming to the refurbished Oak Park Aquatic Centre – planned to reopen for the 2018 - 19 summer season.

To ensure the community still has plenty of swimming options ahead of the summer season, the outdoor pool at the Fawkner Leisure Centre will also be opening earlier this year – from Saturday 18 November.

New Mayor, Councillor John Kavanagh says Merri-bek’s aquatic and leisure centres provide important opportunities for the community to stay active, healthy and connected.

“There are so many great social programs at our local pools – open and safe for people of all backgrounds, abilities and ages. I encourage everyone to visit, even if it’s just to test the water.”

Coburg Olympic Swimming Pool – which is currently being retiled – is anticipated to open a little later this year, on Monday 18 December.
