Late rates payments and payment arrangements

COVID-19

We recognise that the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic will cause financial hardship for members of the community.

If you are experiencing financial hardship, please submit a payment arrangement or extension request below. To discuss further please contact the Revenue Services Unit on 03 9240-1111.

If you are a pensioner, you will automatically receive a $50 rates waiver in 2020-21. If you are a Health Care Card holder you can apply for this discount.

If you own your home and live on a low income, we are offering COVID-19 Relief and Recovery Grants so you can make energy saving upgrades to your home that will reduce your electricity bills. Go to our Zero Carbon Merri-bek website to find out how we're supporting low income earners to improve their homes and reduce their bills.

Rate arrears

Any arrears shown on your annual rates notice must be paid immediately, unless an approved payment agreement or extension is in place. Arrears may be subject to legal action without further notice. Any account escalated to Council's debt collection agency may incur legal costs if legal action is taken.

Penalty interest on late payments

When you pay your rates and charges, it is essential that Council receives your payment by the due date, as shown on your annual rates notice.

If an instalment is not paid on or before the due date, you may be charged interest on the overdue amount.

The 2020-21 rating period has the interest rate set at 10 per cent per annum. This interest rate is fixed under Section 2 of the Penalty Interest Rates Act 1983.

Payment arrangements with Council

If you are experiencing difficulties that prevent you from paying your rates and
charges by the due date, it is important that you
contact Council to discuss an alternative payment plan.

A payment arrangement submission can be made via the online form below or here (DOC 50Kb).

All payment arrangements are managed by Council’s appointed collection agent, Recoveries and Reconstructions.

If you organise a payment arrangement and follow the agreed payment plan, Council will withhold recovery action against outstanding rate arrears.
