Fire services levy

What is the Fire Services Property Levy?

The Victorian Government’s Fire Services Property Levy is collected with your Council rates.

All revenue collected for the Fire Services Property Levy goes directly to the State Government to help support Victoria’s fire services.

Previously, fire services were funded by contributions made by the insurance industry and the State Government. Collection through Council rates ensures that Victorian property owners pay a fair contribution to fire services and are not penalised for adequately insuring their property.

Calculate your Fire Services Property Levy

Visit the State Government website to calculate your Fire Services Property Levy.

The Fire Services Property Levy consists of a fixed component plus a variable component calculated as a percentage of capital improved property value. The fixed component for the 2020-21 rating period is $113.00 for residential properties and $230.00 for non-residential properties.

Separate levies are charged in Metropolitan Fire Brigade and Country Fire Authority areas, recognising the different costs associated with funding each service.

Councils collect the levy through rates on behalf of the State Government.

Pension concession

Eligible pensioners are entitled to a $50.00 rebate against the Fire Services Property Levy for their principal place of residence.

If a pensioner currently receives a rate concession rebate, they automatically receive the $50.00 concession on the Fire Services Property Levy.

For further information on Victorian concessions call the Concessions Information Line on 1800 658 521.
